About wills law: The law governing wills in England and Wales is the Wills Act 1837. The Law Commission published its report Modernising Wills in May 2025, recommending significant reforms. The UK Government has not yet published its formal response and no Wills Bill has been introduced. Your will is valid under current law. WillSafe will notify customers when any material change in the law occurs. Learn more.

Questions about this kit

Why do cohabiting couples need a Will more urgently than married couples?+

Under the intestacy rules that apply when someone dies without a Will, an unmarried partner inherits nothing — regardless of how long you have lived together. Married spouses have protected rights; cohabitees have none. Without a Will, your estate would pass to your nearest blood relatives, potentially leaving your partner with nothing.

Can't we just use the Mirror Wills Kit?+

You can use any Will template, but this kit is specifically written for cohabiting couples. It explains the legal differences from married couples' Wills, covers what happens to jointly held property, and includes a cohabitation checklist that is not in the Mirror Wills Kit.

Is this legal advice?+

No. WillSafe UK sells self-help templates. We do not provide legal advice. For complex situations or if you want a cohabitation agreement, speak to a solicitor.
