About this template
The Single Will Kit is a complete last will and testament template for England and Wales. You download it instantly, fill in the highlighted sections in Word or by hand, then print and sign it in front of two witnesses. Most people finish in about 30 minutes with the pre-completion checklist done first.
The template already contains every clause a valid will needs: revocation of earlier wills, executor appointment, guardianship for children under 18, specific gifts, the residuary estate clause, substitute beneficiaries and the attestation clause that records correct signing. The plain-English guide explains each decision as you reach it.
Signing is what makes a will legally valid. Under section 9 of the Wills Act 1837 you must sign in the presence of two adult witnesses, who each sign in your presence; neither witness may be a beneficiary or married to one. The kit includes a visual signing ceremony guide so you get this right first time.
It suits adults with a straightforward estate: a home, savings, personal belongings and clear wishes about who inherits. If your situation involves trusts, business assets or foreign property, we recommend a solicitor instead, and we say so plainly throughout the guide.

Is this legally valid?+
The template is drafted in accordance with the Wills Act 1837. Validity depends on you signing it correctly in front of two witnesses. Follow the signing instructions exactly, our visual signing guide walks you through every step.

Is a last will and testament different from a will?+
No. 'Last will and testament' is the traditional long name for the same document; 'will' is simply the everyday short form. English law uses the two interchangeably, and this template is a full last will and testament for England and Wales whichever name you prefer.
Can I use this template if I live in Scotland or Northern Ireland?+
No. This last will and testament template is drafted for the law of England and Wales only. Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own succession rules and signing formalities, so you would need a template prepared for those jurisdictions.
