Questions about this kit

Does marriage revoke my Will?+

Yes. Under s18 Wills Act 1837, marriage usually revokes an existing Will unless the Will expressly states it is made 'in contemplation of' that marriage. We cover this in the guide.

Are mirror wills legally binding on the surviving partner?+

No — and this is one of the most important things couples need to understand. Mirror Wills are two separate Wills that happen to mirror each other. After the first partner dies, the survivor can change their Will entirely. If you want legally binding mutual obligations, you need a Mutual Will Deed — a different, more complex arrangement that requires a solicitor.

We own property together — does a Will control who inherits it?+

Only if you own the property as tenants in common (not joint tenants). If you hold it as joint tenants, the property passes to the surviving owner automatically by right of survivorship, regardless of what your Will says. The kit includes a plain-English explainer on this important distinction.
