About this template
A letter of wishes is a personal note that sits alongside your will. It is not legally binding, but it guides your executors and family on the things a will does not cover: your funeral wishes, who should have particular belongings, how you would like children cared for, the reasons behind your decisions, and personal messages to the people you love.
WillSafe Platinum Letter of Wishes makes it easy to get those thoughts down. You simply talk, or type, in answer to gentle prompts, and we write them up into a warm, well-presented letter and email it to you as a Word document you can keep with your will.
Because it is a personal letter and not a legal instrument, there is nothing to witness: you can simply sign and date it, or not, and keep it safe. You can rewrite it any time your wishes change.
Your microphone answers are transcribed inside your own browser, so nothing is recorded by us. Your answers are not stored on our servers, and the finished letter is emailed to you and not kept afterwards.
This may not be right for you if…
- •People looking for a legally binding document, a letter of wishes is not binding
- •Anyone who needs to change who inherits, that belongs in the will itself
In these cases, we recommend speaking to a solicitor.
Questions about this kit
Is a letter of wishes legally binding?+
No, and that is the point of it. It is a personal, non-binding note that guides your executors and family on matters your will does not cover. It does not change your will, and if the two ever conflict, your will prevails.
Do I need to have it witnessed?+
No. Unlike a will, a letter of wishes does not need witnesses. You can simply sign and date it if you wish, and keep it with your will so your executors can find it.
What can I put in it?+
Funeral and memorial wishes, who should have particular belongings, guidance for your children's guardians, the reasons behind your decisions, care of pets, where to find documents, and personal messages. Include as much or as little as you like.
Is this legal advice?+
No. WillSafe Platinum is a self-help service and we are not a firm of solicitors. For complex matters, speak to a solicitor.
